Biography
George Takei is an American actor best known for playing Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the USS Enterprise, in the television series Star Trek (1966) and the first six feature films in the franchise.
Born Hosato Takei on 20 April 1937 in Los Angeles, California, to Japanese-American parents, he studied theatre at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a BA in 1960 and an MA in 1964. He has appeared in numerous other television series and films, including voice roles in The Simpsons, Futurama and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Takei came out as gay in 2005 and has been active in LGBTQ rights advocacy and Japanese-American community issues. He married Brad Altman in 2008.
