Biography
John Seale is an Australian cinematographer. Born on 5 October 1942 in Warwick, Queensland, he began his career in Australia collaborating with director Peter Weir as a camera operator and director of photography.
Seale gained international recognition working on films including Witness (1985), Rain Man (1988), Dead Poets Society (1989), The English Patient (1996), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). He received further Oscar nominations for Witness, Rain Man, Cold Mountain (2003) and Mad Max: Fury Road. He directed one feature, Till There Was You (1990).
Seale is a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society and the American Society of Cinematographers. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2002 for services to the arts.
