Tom Wilkinson makes stiff, guarded men worth watching without forcing them to explain themselves. We rate him especially highly in company, where his restraint gives comedy weight and helps a supporting character feel like someone with a life elsewhere.

Gerald's stiffness in The Full Monty (1997) is funny because it makes him so unlike the men around him. Robert Carlyle's Gaz supplies the forward push; Mark Addy's Dave makes physical embarrassment matter; Wilkinson gives the group someone who cannot quite loosen up. We warmed to Gerald because Peter Cattaneo lets him be awkward without treating awkwardness as a defect. Wilkinson makes him distinct while leaving the other actors room, and the group feels more convincing for its differences.
That international breakthrough came after years of stage and television work, and Shakespeare in Love (1998) soon supplied another ensemble that benefited from his firmness. As Hugh Fennyman, he gives the business of theatre comic weight alongside Geoffrey Rush's Philip Henslowe. John Madden lets the supporting actors enjoy themselves, and Wilkinson makes good use of the permission without pulling attention away from the lovers. The romance is too neatly arranged for our liking, but these theatre people give us a reason to stay.
In the Bedroom (2001) gave him a lead as Matt Fowler, a part built around grief and moral conflict. He also played Dr Mierzwiak in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and the lawyer Arthur Edens in Michael Clayton (2007). The later career leaned towards supporting parts rather than leads, which limited how much of him a film could offer. It is no reason to mistake dependable casting for easy work.
He was often cast as an authoritative or repressed man, and his skill was in allowing vulnerability to show while keeping the outward restraint. In the comedies, that gives the other actors something to work against, rather than leaving everyone to pursue a separate joke. We especially value him there: his precision helps the company feel less like actors taking their turns to be funny. Begin with The Full Monty, with the caveat that the film is quicker to cheer us up about hardship than we would like.
Biography
Tom Wilkinson (also credited as Thomas Geoffrey Wilkinson) was an English actor. Born in Leeds, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his West End debut as Horatio in Hamlet (1980).
He appeared as Peter Rawlins in the 1991 series Prime Suspect and as Gerald Arthur Cooper in the 1997 film The Full Monty, for which he received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Wilkinson was nominated for two Academy Awards, for In the Bedroom (2001) and Michael Clayton (2007), and received a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for his performance in the 2008 miniseries John Adams. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2005.
Wilkinson died on 30 December 2023. Among his other film roles were parts in Sense and Sensibility (1995), Shakespeare in Love (1998), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Batman Begins (2005), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011).
