In Boogie Nights (1997), John C. Reilly makes Reed Rothchild seem worth following even when the story has somewhere else to go. We wanted more time with Reed and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Scotty J., because both made us care about people beyond Eddie's immediate concerns. Reilly gives that crowded company some of its warmth. His earnest, vulnerable men are often funny, but he lets us take their feelings seriously. That is what we value in him: he can make a supporting character's worries matter without asking the whole film to stop for them.
After supporting parts in Casualties of War (1989) and Days of Thunder (1990), wider notice came through Paul Thomas Anderson's early films. Their work often involved improvisation, including the development of Officer Jim Kurring in Magnolia (1999). Reilly's ability to move between dramatic intensity and broad comedy also serves him as Amos Hart in Chicago (2002). The leading role of Oliver Hardy in Stan & Ollie (2018) gives particular weight to his comic timing and physicality.
Anderson's ensembles remain the clearest reason for our enthusiasm. In Boogie Nights, Dylan Tichenor's editing keeps the company legible and lets the early scenes move easily between people. Reilly benefits from being one of several performers we are allowed to become curious about. The subplots accumulate until some seem to be there chiefly because another good actor is available. We would trim some of that company to give the central drama more urgency, even at the cost of a performance we enjoy.
His appearance as Sgt. Maynard Storm in Terrence Malick's The Thin Red Line (1998) places him in another large company. We find the film moving and patient, though some of its soldiers barely emerge as people. His reputation as a reliable character actor has sometimes restricted his chances of studio leads. We would like more chances to see how long he can hold our interest when the story belongs to him. Begin with Boogie Nights, if there is room tonight for a generous drama that sometimes lets its subplots run too long.

John C. Reilly is an American actor. Born on 24 May 1965 in Chicago, Illinois, he trained at the Goodman School of Drama and performed with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He made his film debut in Casualties of War (1989) and gained early supporting roles in Days of Thunder (1990).
Reilly has worked frequently with director Paul Thomas Anderson, appearing in Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997) as Reed Rothchild, and Magnolia (1999). He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Chicago (2002). Other notable credits include Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) and voice work as Ralph in the Wreck-It Ralph films (2012–2018). He is married to producer Alison Dickey.
