Biography
John Arthur Lithgow (born 19 October 1945) is an American actor. He studied at Harvard University and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He made his Broadway debut in The Changing Room (1972).
Lithgow is known for his stage work, including Tony Award-winning performances in Sweet Smell of Success (2002) and Giant (2026). On television he played Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996–2001), Arthur Mitchell in Dexter (2006–2013) and Winston Churchill in The Crown (2016–2019). His film roles include Prosecutor Peter Leaward in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) and Cardinal Tremblay in Conclave (2024).
He has received three Tony Awards, seven Primetime Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards, as well as two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
