Judy Greer is good at making the friend or the mother matter when the story belongs to somebody else. We value her emotional directness, but dependable supporting work can become an excuse to underuse her.

Before dawn in The Long Walk (2025), Judy Greer drops Cooper Hoffman's Raymond Garraty at a roadside for a contest she cannot stop him entering. The scene gives her a painfully simple task: bring him there while wishing he would not go. We found the departure upsetting: he has volunteered, and her wish to protect him cannot undo that decision. Francis Lawrence's film has its limits as it stretches a single idea, but this early encounter makes us care about someone before the ordeal begins.
Her first notable film part came in Jawbreaker (1999), with David O. Russell's Three Kings (1999) arriving that same year. We rate the latter highly for its abrasive images and performances, while finding its moral lessons too tidy. The comedies and dramas that followed made supporting work her usual occupation, with 13 Going on 30 (2004) and recurring appearances in Arrested Development establishing her familiar presence in film and television comedy. Friends, colleagues and family members are useful parts, though they can also become a way of giving a dependable actor less to do.
The emotional supporting work in The Descendants (2011) gives a better indication of why we want more than comic company from her. Greer is valuable when a film allows someone outside the central story to have feelings that complicate it. Lawrence gives her that opportunity in The Long Walk: Garraty has chosen to take part, but watching his mother makes that choice harder to accept. The risk is that another friend or family member will give her a useful job without asking anything new of her.
The shift into blockbusters from 2014 brought Cornelia, a motion-capture role in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), followed by Maggie Lang in Ant-Man (2015). Animation provides another outlet through her voice work as Cheryl Tunt in Archer. These demand different techniques, though a change of format does not necessarily give a supporting actor more to play. Start with The Long Walk if its grim premise appeals; we would still like a few more films to let her carry the story.

Judy Greer is an American actress. She was born Judith Therese Evans on 20 July 1975 in Detroit, Michigan.
Greer is known for supporting roles in films including 13 Going on 30 (2004), Elizabethtown (2005), 27 Dresses (2008), The Descendants (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), Jurassic World (2015), Ant-Man (2015), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Halloween (2018) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). On television she has appeared in Arrested Development, The Big Bang Theory and voiced Cheryl Tunt in Archer (2009–2023). She made her directorial debut with A Happening of Monumental Proportions (2017).
In 2025 she played Mrs. Ginnie Garraty in The Long Walk.
