Biography
Emmanuel Lubezki, also known as Chivo, is a Mexican cinematographer. He was born on 30 November 1964 in Mexico City and studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
Lubezki began working in Mexican film and television in the late 1980s before moving to international productions. He served as cinematographer on The Birdcage (1996) and has collaborated frequently with directors including Alfonso Cuarón, Terrence Malick and Alejandro González Iñárritu. His credits include Sleepy Hollow (1999), Ali (2001), Children of Men (2006), The Tree of Life (2011), Gravity (2013), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) and The Revenant (2015).
He has won three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, for Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant. Lubezki is a member of the Mexican Society of Cinematographers and the American Society of Cinematographers, and received the Royal Photographic Society Lumière Award in 2016.
