Morgan Freeman makes calm look like something a person has worked to maintain. We value the weariness beneath his authority, though too many later roles ask only for the reassuring voice and leave the actor little to do.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Morgan Freeman's Red is composed, but the tiredness remains visible. Freeman lets us see how much work goes into remaining decent. We were moved because his weariness makes the friendship with Tim Robbins's character feel necessary to getting through the day. Neither man needs to be remarkable for us to believe that he needs company.
His breakthrough films, Street Smart (1987) and Driving Miss Daisy (1989), came before the later concentration on wise men and mentors. The early work also allowed for menace and more difficult characters. Calm authority serves his Detective Somerset in David Fincher's Se7en (1995), but it would become an increasingly narrow casting brief. Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005) is part of the subsequent run of mentor roles. We miss the possibility that he might make us uncomfortable.
Red's narration puts Freeman's deep voice to obvious use, but Frank Darabont also gives his work with Robbins time to make an impression. Their friendship earns the film its warmth. The writing is less persuasive when it checks that we have understood the moral lessons, and prison life can look too tidy. Those reservations matter, though they never quite displace our interest in the two men. Darabont's patience pays off most clearly in their scenes together.
The danger comes when a part wants the voice and scarcely needs the rest of him. Later casting has too often settled for the wise authority figure, leaving little room for surprise. The glossy, busy Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025), in which he plays Thaddeus Bradley, is a reminder that his presence alone is no reason to recommend a film. Its eagerness to explain every illusion remains a problem, whoever is in the cast. For an introduction, choose The Shawshank Redemption and accept its occasional lecture.

Morgan Freeman is an American actor. Born on 1 June 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, he began his career on stage and in the children's television series The Electric Company in the 1970s.
Freeman received an Academy Award nomination for his role in Street Smart (1987). He was nominated again for Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and won the award for Best Supporting Actor for Million Dollar Baby (2004). He is also known for playing Lucius Fox in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and Thaddeus Bradley in the Now You See Me films, including Now You See Me: Now You Don't (2025).
