Overhead lighting and carefully arranged frames are characteristic of Phil Abraham's work, rather than heavy reliance on close-ups. His background in cinematography helps explain the attention to how light can suggest a character's mood. We value that care, particularly when several actors have to make a scene work together. It is a useful qualification for a director working across ensemble television, where individual performances need to belong to the same programme.
Abraham moved from cinematography into directing on The Sopranos (1999–2007), directing his first episode in its final season. On Matthew Weiner's Mad Men (2007), he photographed the pilot and went on to direct 15 episodes. His contribution there included helping establish the programme's visual style, giving us a concrete reason to take his judgement seriously. Later credits, including Daredevil (2015), reflect his move towards regular episodic directing across crime and genre television.
Your Friends & Neighbors (2025) gives us a qualified reason to follow him. Its comedy of suburban wealth and burglary is worth watching chiefly for Jon Hamm, with the ensemble keeping the relationship drama lively around him. We enjoyed those relationships because Hamm and the supporting cast kept the exchanges engaging even when the observations about privilege sounded familiar. The distinction matters: there is enough pleasure in watching these people deal with one another to sustain interest, but little freshness in what the series says about their wealth. We recommend it on those modest terms.
We are wary of treating an episodic director as a programme's sole author, especially when the pleasures here depend so plainly on Hamm and the ensemble. Abraham's part in establishing the look of Mad Men gives us firmer grounds for praising his visual judgement than the directing credit on Your Friends & Neighbors alone. We would follow his work without assuming his presence guarantees equally thoughtful writing. Start with Your Friends & Neighbors for Hamm and the cast; its account of privilege is unlikely to surprise.
Biography
Phil Abraham is an American cinematographer and television director. He worked on all six seasons of The Sopranos, initially as a camera operator, then as a cinematographer and later as an episodic director.
Abraham has directed episodes of numerous series, including Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Ozark, Daredevil and Your Friends & Neighbors (2026). He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a One-Hour Series in 2008 for the pilot of Mad Men and has received further Emmy nominations for his work on The Sopranos and as a director on Mad Men.
