Biography
Stephen Root is an American actor. Born on 17 November 1951 in Sarasota, Florida, he trained at the University of Florida, where he earned a BFA in acting.
Root is known for his roles as Jimmy James in the sitcom NewsRadio (1995–1999), Milton Waddams in the film Office Space (1999), and as the voice of Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland in the animated series King of the Hill (1997–2010, 2025–present). He has appeared in several films by the Coen brothers, including O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), No Country for Old Men (2007) and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). Other film roles include Jim Hudson in Get Out (2017).
On television, Root played Monroe Fuches in the series Barry (2018–2023) and Wyck Crawford in Widow's Bay (2026–present), earning Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for both performances. He has also voiced characters in Finding Nemo (2003) and Ice Age (2002).
