Biography
Dimitri Tiomkin was a composer and conductor. Born Dimitri Zinovievich Tiomkin on 10 May 1894 in Kremenchug, then in the Poltava governorate of the Russian Empire, he received classical training in St Petersburg before the Bolshevik Revolution. He moved to Berlin and then New York after the Revolution, and settled in Hollywood in 1929.
Tiomkin composed the music for It's a Wonderful Life (1946) and Dial M for Murder (1954). He is also known for his scores for High Noon (1952), Strangers on a Train (1951), Rio Bravo (1959), Giant (1956) and The Guns of Navarone (1961). He received 22 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars.
