Biography
Ian Holm was an English actor. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began his career on the British stage as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Holm received a Tony Award for his performance in the 1967 Broadway production of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. He won BAFTA Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for The Bofors Gun (1968) and Chariots of Fire (1981), and was nominated for an Academy Award for the latter. He was appointed CBE in 1989 and knighted in 1998. His film roles include Ash in Alien (1979), Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire (1981), Cornelius in The Fifth Element (1997), and Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003) and The Hobbit films (2012–2014). He also appeared as Dr Murnau in Kafka (1991).
