Biography
James Earl Jones was an American actor whose screen career began with the role of Lt. Lothar Zogg in Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964). He trained at the University of Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in drama in 1953, and studied acting in New York with Lee Strasberg. His early work included stage productions with the New York Shakespeare Festival.
Jones is known for voice performances as Darth Vader in the Star Wars films (1977–1983, with later appearances) and Mufasa in The Lion King (1994 and 2019). He received Tony Awards for The Great White Hope (1968) and Fences (1987), and won two Emmy Awards. He died on 9 September 2024.
