Paul Bettany

In Amadeus (2025), Paul Bettany makes Salieri’s admiration for Mozart as troubling as his envy. This composer knows what he is hearing, and each recognition of another man’s gift makes his own work harder to value. Bettany keeps that shame present even when the two men are simply discussing their work. We found his torment unexpectedly upsetting because he lets us feel how much Salieri admires the music that diminishes him. It is a persuasive reason to watch a series whose central exchanges begin to repeat themselves.

His film breakthrough came with Gangster No. 1 (2000), followed by A Knight’s Tale (2001) and A Beautiful Mind (2001). The intelligent supporting figure became a familiar place for him, but it need not be a secondary presence. As the ship’s doctor Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003), he gives the central partnership an equal footing. He can support another actor without making his own character seem less worth attending to, a useful quality when the part could otherwise amount to explaining things.

Marvel gave him a different sort of supporting job: voice work in Iron Man (2008). He went on to play Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), before WandaVision (2021) gave him a television lead. The move from voice to physical performance suits an actor who can establish a character without being the centre of a film. Yet intelligence becomes more interesting in Amadeus, where understanding the music only worsens Salieri’s distress.

Directors Alice Seabright and Julian Farino give the performers space in Amadeus, and Gabrielle Creevy makes Constanze worth following in her own right. Five episodes also expose a limit to what even attentive acting can do: Salieri and Mozart’s exchanges begin to repeat themselves. Bettany supplies a reason to stay with them, but he cannot make every repetition necessary. Start here for Bettany, with patience for a rivalry the series gives rather more time than it needs.
