Biography
Adrian, born Adrian Adolph Greenberg, was an American costume designer. He worked under the professional name Adrian, and was sometimes credited as Gilbert Adrian. He began his career designing for stage productions including Irving Berlin revues before moving to Hollywood.
He became head costume designer at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1928 to 1941, creating costumes for more than 250 films, usually credited as "Gowns by Adrian". His work includes The Wizard of Oz (1939), Grand Hotel (1932), Ninotchka (1939), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Rope (1948). He left MGM in 1941 to establish his own fashion house.
Adrian was born on 3 March 1903 in Naugatuck, Connecticut, and died on 13 September 1959 in Hollywood, California. He was married to actress Janet Gaynor from 1939 until his death.
