Biography

Milena Canonero is an Italian costume designer. Born in Turin, she studied fashion, period design and art history in Genoa before moving to England in the late 1960s, where she began working in theatre, commercials and film.

She received her first major credit on Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971) and went on to collaborate repeatedly with Kubrick, Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola. Her work includes Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Ocean's Twelve (2004), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), Marie Antoinette (2006), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Asteroid City (2023) and Megalopolis (2024). She has also designed for stage productions.

Canonero has won four Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and received nine nominations in total. She is married to actor Marshall Bell.
