Biography
Franz Waxman (born Franz Wachsmann) was a German-born composer who worked primarily in film music. He was born on 24 December 1906 in Königshütte, Upper Silesia (now Chorzów, Poland), and died on 24 February 1967 in Los Angeles.
Waxman scored numerous Hollywood films, including Bride of Frankenstein (1935), Rebecca (1940), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Suspicion (1941), To Have and Have Not (1945), Sunset Boulevard (1950), A Place in the Sun (1951), Stalag 17 (1953) and Rear Window (1954). He received twelve Academy Award nominations and won two consecutive Oscars for Sunset Boulevard and A Place in the Sun. He also received a Golden Globe Award for Sunset Boulevard.
He founded the Los Angeles Music Festival in 1947 and composed concert works such as the oratorio Joshua (1959) and The Song of Terezin (1965).
