Biography
Jonathan Pryce is a Welsh actor. He was born on 1 June 1947 in Flintshire, Wales. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he began his career as a stage actor in the 1970s. His theatre work includes award-winning performances in the title role of Hamlet at the Royal Court Theatre and as The Engineer in Miss Saigon.
Pryce made his breakthrough screen performance in the 1985 film Brazil. He has appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean films (2003–2007) as Governor Weatherby Swann, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) as Elliot Carver, and The Two Popes (2019) as Jorge Bergoglio / Pope Francis. He received an Academy Award nomination for the latter role. More recent credits include One Life (2023) as Martin Blake, the series Slow Horses (2022–) as David Cartwright, and The Thursday Murder Club (2025) as Stephen.
Pryce has won two Tony Awards, for Comedians (1977) and Miss Saigon (1991). He has been married to actress Kate Fahy since 2015.
