A sport film is rarely about the sport. The match, the bout or the frame is a way of making a person's character public, usually at the moment it is about to give way, and what we are scoring is whether the film tells the truth about losing. The weak ones hand out victories like sweets. The good ones know the contest is the easy part, and that the years before and after are where the person actually lives. Our shelf leans to the last two decades and to boxing, where John G. Avildsen and Sylvester Stallone keep turning up, and the documentaries, more often than not, beat the dramas.

Start with Hoop Dreams (92), which follows two young basketball hopefuls through school and family and asks for no interest in basketball at all; Raging Bull (91), punishing, exact, and never letting the violence become a pleasure; and The Hustler (88), for Paul Newman at his most alive in pool halls that look like real rooms. After those, give O.J.: Made in America a week rather than an evening.
