Biography
John Barry was an English composer and conductor of film music. Born John Barry Prendergast in York on 3 November 1933, he died on 30 January 2011. He received an OBE in 1999 for services to music.
Barry composed the scores for eleven James Bond films between 1963 and 1987, and arranged and performed the "James Bond Theme" for the first film in the series, Dr. No (1962). His other scores include Out of Africa (1985), The Cotton Club (1984), Chaplin (1992) and The Scarlet Letter (1995).
He won five Academy Awards, including for the scores to Born Free (1966), The Lion in Winter (1968), Out of Africa (1985) and Dances with Wolves (1990).
