Biography

Joanna Johnston is an English costume designer. She began her career as an assistant to Anthony Powell on films including Death on the Nile (1978) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). Her first solo credit as costume designer was on Hellraiser (1987).

Johnston has collaborated extensively with directors Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. Her credits with Spielberg include Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Saving Private Ryan (1998), War of the Worlds (2005), Lincoln (2012) and The BFG (2016). With Zemeckis she has worked on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), the Back to the Future sequels (1989–1990), Forrest Gump (1994), Cast Away (2000) and Allied (2016).

Recent work includes Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Jurassic World Dominion (2022), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023), Here (2024) and The Thursday Murder Club (2025). She received Academy Award nominations for Lincoln and Allied.
