Biography
Cedric Gibbons was an Irish-born art director and production designer who worked primarily in Hollywood. He served as supervising art director at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1924 until his retirement in 1956.
Gibbons received credit on numerous MGM productions, including Random Harvest (1942). Among the films on which he is listed as art director are The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Philadelphia Story (1940), Gaslight (1944), An American in Paris (1951) and Singin' in the Rain (1952). He was one of the original founding members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and designed the Oscar statuette in 1928; he received 39 Academy Award nominations for art direction and won 11 times.
